129 Evere Mill – Brussels Museum of the Mill and Food

A witness to the municipality’s agricultural past, the Evere mill forms a unique site at the heart of the Brussels Region. Today hidden by the surrounding buildings, it forms, together with its park, a true green enclave within the urban fabric. Built in 1841, the mill underwent several changes over time. A steam engine was installed in 1853, and its wooden sails were eventually removed in the 1880s. Two new buildings were added in 1887 and 1904. Unable to compete with the large mills of Willebroek, the mill closed in 1911 and later housed various small local industries, including the Oscar Tausig spice factory until 1983. Left abandoned, the Evere mill was listed in 1990. Restored, it has housed the Brussels Museum of the Mill and Food since 2008. The former windmill of Evere is an integral part of the municipality’s landscape and bears witness to its evolution. (Listed since 20/12/1990)
The Evere Mill is open for self-guided visits on Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00. Guided tours are also offered with booking.
As a new temporary exhibition is being prepared, some rooms will exceptionally not be accessible to the public. The visit will focus mainly on the mill tower, its oldest part. The self-guided visit gives access to the ground floor and the 1st and 2nd floors, while the guided tours also provide access to the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors of the tower, usually closed to the public.
The upper floors are accessible only by narrow, steep stairs.
Alongside the mill visit, two partner activities are offered in the mill and park: the Confrérie des Compagnons du Witloof, around chicory in the kitchen-workshop space, and the Fournil de l’Hof ter Musschen, around the mill’s bread oven.
