Food history
Tour & Taxis has always been an important place in the history of food. The presence of the freight station, along with the canal quays, allowed many food products — including colonial goods — to reach Brussels. The import of chocolate, bananas, spirits, coffee, wine and other products encouraged the rise of chocolatiers, drinks warehouses and related commercial activities. Today, the site and its surroundings still play an important role in food. Urban food production, from mushrooms to fermentation initiatives and breweries, has found its place here, while Parckfarm has become a key player in urban agriculture. This walk, on and around the Tour & Taxis site, brings together traces of the past and present-day activities.
