Bike tour
32 About Martinis, coffee bean men, and a margarine war
[Food history]
This bike ride explores the evolution of food advertising in public space. Enamel signs and enamel workshops provide the starting point, but the route also looks at murals, posters, illuminated signs, poster kiosks, bus shelters and other supports used to promote food products and iconic brands such as Solo, Martini, Byrrh, Pacha and Wielemans. The focus is on the advertising medium itself and on the changes it underwent, including the disappearance of enamel in favour of more ephemeral materials and channels such as paper, radio and television. The stories behind the food products themselves will also be discussed: why these brands were present, and what impact they had on Brussels.
Each participant should bring their own bicycle. Participants must be able to cycle 12 km.
In collaboration with De Brigade.
