From the heights of Forest, Brussels unfolds from a different angle. Why do these elevated neighbourhoods bear the evocative name “Altitude”? How were they planned and organised? Did urban planners deliberately use views and relief to structure the city?
This walk explores the essential role of perspective and panorama in 19th- and 20th-century urban planning. Between park, broad avenues and prestigious monuments, these neighbourhoods appear as spaces of modernity. The “high-level” walk begins in front of Saint-Gilles prison and ends with the exceptional panorama from the tower of the Church of Saint Augustine, where the Brussels landscape can be taken in as a whole. A route that offers distance — and a new way of looking at Brussels.
