In 1930, Georgette and René Magritte moved into this house, which had been built five years earlier. They lived there for 24 years. The artist welcomed many of his Surrealist friends here, including Louis Scutenaire, Marcel Mariën and Édouard Mesens. In 1993, the non-profit organisation Musée René Magritte purchased the building and restored it to reflect its original character. Opened on 5 June 1999, it was complemented twenty years later by another museum dedicated to Abstract Art, housed in the neighbouring building. Open to the public since 10 November 2019, the Museum of Abstract Art displays part of its collection, which comprises more than 750 works.

While the second floor is devoted to the historic avant-garde of the 1920s, featuring artists such as Jules Schmalzigaug, Joseph Lacasse and Victor Servranckx, the ground floor and third floor showcase the second generation of abstract artists, from the 1950s to the 1980s, including Pierre Alechinsky, Pol Bury, René Guiette, Maurice Wyckaert and Floris Jespers.

In the Magrittes’ apartment, the focus will be on Jette’s urban landscape between 1930 and 1954, both as a living environment and as a source of inspiration for the master. In the Museum of Abstract Art, attention will be given to the urban landscape as represented by artists associated with the movement, as well as to modernist interventions in the cityscape, such as the Atomium and the monumental sculptures of Jacques Moeschal and Hilde Van Sumere.
