Art Nouveau at work!

© urban.brussels

Art Nouveau is often seen as elitist, an architectural style found only in the homes of the Brussels bourgeoisie.

In fact, however, Art Nouveau took a wide variety of forms and had an impact on the whole population, particularly in the workplace. At that time, Belgium was Europe's second largest industrial power and many buildings and monuments were erected to celebrate and promote work.

This walking tour through some lesser-known aspects of Art Nouveau will uncover its social, technical and philosophical facets, as viewed through the prism of work in that period.

In cooperation with Le Tamanoir.
