In 1897, Leopold II had Avenue de Tervueren laid out to link the Cinquantenaire to the royal estate of Tervuren. This royal gesture transformed a rural municipality within a few decades into a first-rate bourgeois residential district. Along the planted avenue, townhouses by leading architects appeared, including Josef Hoffmann’s famous Stoclet Palace. Flanked by Woluwe Park and Parmentier Park, both designed in the English style by French landscape architect Élie Lainé, the avenue shows how a political and infrastructural project can create a landscape of prestige from scratch and make it endure.
