Embassy of Azerbaijan (fully booked)

A. de Ville de Goyet © urban.brussels

This imposing postmodern office building was built in 1994 to plans by architect Luc Konior of Montois and Partners, in collaboration with Polish architect Stanisław Fijałkowski. It features a combination of white and grey granite, covered by a zinc-clad mansard roof. A canopy decorated with wave-shaped cut-outs marks the main entrance, which is surmounted by a long, curved bay window extending to the top of the lower slope of the roof. The building replaced two opulent villas, of which only the railings remain.

Home to the Embassy of Azerbaijan, the building will host an exhibition of carpets illustrating the different schools of weavers, each distinguished by their chosen motifs and colour palette. This ancestral art has been inscribed on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2010. A video will introduce visitors to the traditional music of Azerbaijan, from shepherds' flutes to contemporary compositions, including the art of the ashiqs – poets, lute players and storytellers rolled into one – and Mugham, a genre based on improvisation.

On reservation only:  piano concert on Saturday and on Sunday, at 15:30. Ms. Sabina Mammadova at the piano, Ms. Vusala Jabir as vocalist. Max 100 people.
