The Hof ter Musschen site, or Sparrow Farm, is a typical remnant of a Brabant rural landscape, with several noteworthy features — a farm, a windmill and a bakehouse, all listed — and lies within a Natura 2000 conservation area. Hof ter Musschen won the Belgian Landscape Prize in 2014 and was selected as Belgium’s candidate for the Council of Europe Landscape Award in 2015-2016. Nearly 150 plant species can be found there, some of them quite rare. They can be observed in the different zones that make up the site, which covers nearly 10 hectares. A line of springs, old drainage ditches, several streams, marshy alder-willow woodland and meadows along the Woluwe form the wetland proper, which has continued to evolve over the past two centuries. On the eastern edge of the site, a paved sunken lane, already shown on the Ferraris map of 1771, invites visitors to take a walk. It is bordered on both sides by a fine country hedge. The square farmstead, whose oldest parts date from the 15th century, fits harmoniously into the site’s gently sloping terrain. (Listed since 1994)
