271 From final resting place to living space: a cemetery becomes a park

Georges Henri Park, much appreciated by local residents, has a surprising history. The site was once Etterbeek’s first municipal cemetery, where nearly 45,000 people were buried until the 1960s. Its transformation into a public park preserved traces of its former use: relief, paths, remarkable trees and even gravestones reused as paving. Georges Henri Park thus embodies the transformation of landscapes and their reappropriation by residents, bringing new life to a place of memory and reflection.
