École / School Vervloesem

With its simple architecture, this school recalls the typology of rural settlements, starting with the very first school built by the municipality on rue Madyol/Madyolstraat (St-Lambert Library, until April 2023). A new school was inaugurated in 1909, when Woluwe-Saint-Lambert/Sint Lambert Woluwe was still a suburb but with an increasing population. Set perpendicular to the road and flanked by a tree-lined playground, the low buildings of this new school are representative of a precise conception of public school building. It was designed by Henri Jacobs, a leading specialist in public procurement for the construction of schools. Inside, the space is organized around a large covered courtyard which has, upstairs, a circulation gallery equipped with Art Nouveau balustrades. The school was enlarged in 1925 by Henri Jacobs, who added a second floor with a sheds roof, allowing optimal zenithal lighting. (Protected 10/10/1996)
