243 Le Coin du Balai, Rik Wouters’ beloved corner

Adjacent to the Sonian Forest, once the hunting ground of Charles V, the Coin du Balai combines the picturesque charm of a village with a history of princely pleasures and forest labour. Its clean air and green setting attracted painter and sculptor Rik Wouters, who settled there in 1907 in search of inspiration and to help care for his wife Hélène, known as Nel, who suffered from tuberculosis.
Along the route, the viewpoints where Wouters set up his easel come into focus, capturing the charm of the forest, the village of Watermael and its landscapes. He would become one of the leading figures of Brabant Fauvism.
