240 International School of Brussels – former Bischoffsheim Castle

The elegant neoclassical residence that now houses the offices of the International School of Brussels was built from 1854 for Jonathan Raphaël Bischoffsheim, a politician, banker and close friend of Leopold I. A few years earlier, he had purchased a vast estate and had it laid out as a park, giving his future residence a fitting green setting. The château still retains its fine volumes and a beautifully decorated hall. Although sports facilities and new school buildings have since been added, a wooded area with several remarkable trees has been preserved. It forms a foretaste of the Sonian Forest, whose edge borders this estate now devoted to education. (Listed since 11/09/1992)
