Hidden between the railway line and residential streets, Dieweg Cemetery unfolds as a quiet enclave where time, nature and memory intertwine. Laid out in the second half of the 19th century, it reflects the way Brussels’ bourgeoisie gave spatial form to its relationship with death, status and remembrance. Since its closure in 1958, nature has gradually taken over: paths fade, monuments become overgrown and the site exudes an atmosphere of stillness and melancholy.
The walk reads the cemetery almost as a small city. Winding paths, changes in level and funerary monuments form a park-like ensemble where neoclassical tombs, neo-Gothic chapels and Art Nouveau details coexist. Dieweg is the resting place of military figures, artists and intellectuals, including Paul Hankar, Eugène Demolder and Hergé, giving the site a strongly cultural character.
Listed since 1997, Dieweg shows how decay, vegetation and architecture can together create a unique landscape. It is a place where urban history has not been polished smooth, but remains visible in all its fragility and poetry.
