Walking Rally

It's My Pleasure!

© urban.brussels

On this semi-guided family scavenger hunt in an attractive part of Schaerbeek/Schaarbeek, a guide will welcome participants, introduce the theme and issue them with a roadbook. They will then set off, following the instructions to learn all about the Monplaisir ("My Pleasure") neighbourhood, which was urbanised at the end of the 19th century. Here you'll find beautiful traditional, Art Nouveau and eclectic buildings (among others) nestling alongside each other.

Most of the houses date from the second period of Art Nouveau, and are a world away from the lavish creations typically associated with this style. Even so, the architects, including Schaerbeek/Schaarbeek's own François Hemelsoet, often brilliantly incorporated Art Nouveau elements into a more traditional envelope.

A second guide will be waiting for participants at the midway point. Again following the directions in the roadbook, they will discover bow windows, oriels and sgraffiti. The latter, by Privat Livemont – also born in Schaerbeek/Schaarbeek – and Paul Cauchie, add a touch of colour to the more low-key buildings.

Featuring observation, comparisons, questions and answers, this is a fun way for the whole family to learn together!

In cooperation with E-Guides.
