108 An interior landscape: the Devalck House

In 1900, architect Gaspard Devalck designed this Art Nouveau house for his mother. He lavished great care on it and later installed his own studio there. The white-stone façade is crossed by blue-stone bands edged with fine lines of red brick, continuing onto the neighbouring house. An elegant fan-shaped wrought-iron grille can be seen at the cellar window, a fine vegetal sgraffito above the door, and imposing brackets supporting the cornice. Yet the true highlights are the stained-glass windows, attributed to master glassmaker Raphaël Evaldre, depicting stylised and idealised landscapes. The window on the ground floor shows a heron in a reed bed, surrounded by vegetal scrolls. Stylised palmette motifs fill the side bays, while the bow-window glass shows a radiant sun, a bird in flight, irises and plant interlacings that seem to rise from the ground floor. These miraculously preserved windows evoke a series of stylised, idealised landscapes. (Listed since 04/06/2009)
