Walking Tour

An artistic look at Schaerbeek / Schaarbeek façades

© urban.brussels

On this tour, we'll be looking for shoe scrapers and door handles, letterboxes and stained-glass windows, sgraffiti and balustrades, along with other small-scale heritage in the Art Nouveau style.

Starting out from Schaerbeek/Schaarbeek station, we'll walk as far as the Town Hall – and possibly a little further. Along the way, we'll acquaint ourselves with painter and interior designer Privat Livemont and architects Henri Jacobs and François Hemelsoet, among others, and take in the peacocks, flame-haired women, flowers and vines that adorn the façades. Keeping our eyes up, we'll pass "ordinary" houses built at the start of the 20th century for people of varying wealth, all wanting their own artistic façade – preferably different from the one next door.

In cooperation with Klare Lijn.
