The Patinoire royale, the former Royal Skating roller rink, was built in 1877 on the edge of Saint-Gilles. It consists of two wings: the first, which originally housed the rink, opens onto Rue Veydt with a neoclassical façade. The second, smaller and built later, faces Rue Faider. The vast interior space is covered by a remarkable wooden and metal Polonceau truss, named after the French engineer who patented the system in 1837.
The ensemble was acquired in 2007 by Philippe Austruy and Valérie Bach. Restored from 2011 onwards, the Patinoire royale has hosted monographic exhibitions since spring 2015, both in the emblematic nave, a 1,000 m² museum space, and in two other exhibition spaces: the Verrière and the Project Room. It presents major contemporary artists in the fields of design and visual arts. (Listed since 09/03/1995)
