Until the end of the 19th century, women had no access to the academies. It was considered improper for a woman to attend nude drawing classes or to paint large historical scenes. With the arrival of new artistic movements such as Impressionism, the boundaries between pictorial genres began to shift. Landscape was no longer treated as a minor genre, allowing women painters to build genuine professional careers.
Through a route in Ixelles, this walk looks at several Brussels women painters who specialised in landscape and found inspiration in Brussels and its outskirts.
