232 VUB and ULB campus

[New heritage]

After the soldiers left the training ground on the Linthout plateau, the site became the Cinquantenaire Park, while military exercises moved to the land where the VUB and ULB would later be built. The former training ground became a patchwork of buildings that can seem almost randomly assembled. Yet it includes real gems, such as architect Braem’s Rectorate, which appears built for eternity. Others were meant to last only a few years but are still in use today, such as Van Der Meeren’s student housing. Every generation seems to have added something of its own. How can this “campus model” be understood and explained?

In collaboration with Brukselbinnenstebuiten.
