A stretch of water reflects the distinctive silhouette of the Château de Rivieren, a former feudal manor that received various additions over the centuries. The central keep is thought to date from the 13th century, although its bulbous roof and mullioned windows have stripped it of any defensive character. Guillaume De Bruyne, master mason at the Brussels court in 1667, was responsible for one of the residential wings. Other elements date from the 19th century. Surrounded by a pond, a remnant of the former moat, the castle belonged to the Rivieren d’Aerschot family from the 14th century before being sold to the Kinschot family in 1628, who transformed it into a pleasure residence. Through marriage, it eventually passed to the de Villegas de Saint-Pierre family, who kept it until 1980.
As a rare medieval remnant in Brussels, Château de Rivieren stands in a ten-hectare park. It beautifully reflects the evolution of a historic site, exceptionally open to the public for this occasion. (Listed since 14/10/1983)
