This place was born from the vision of one man: Ernest Solvay. In the former Institute of Sociology, researchers from different countries gathered to share and confront their ideas. On the side of the Cité des Sciences, Einstein, Bohr and other Nobel Prize winners debated during the legendary Solvay Councils. The whole site still seems to resonate with powerful ideas and intellectual ambition.
The Institute of Sociology was founded in 1902 thanks to the will and vision of Ernest Solvay: a wealthy industrialist, progressive humanist, thinker and enlightened senator. His aim was to create a research laboratory and meeting place for scholars, a first in Europe. Listed as a historic monument in 1986, the building was restored in 1994 by the Brussels-Capital Region and citydev.brussels. Today, in this remarkable library with its complex, almost novel-like style, Edificio gives private and professional events a particularly distinctive setting.
