Along the Brussels canal in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, a story of water, industry and human movement unfolds. What began as a peripheral municipality quickly became, in the 19th century, a place of production, driven by the proximity of the canal and the flow of goods through Tour & Taxis. Breweries, factories and workers’ housing formed a recognisable ensemble where work and housing were closely intertwined. Migrants from Belgium and abroad left their mark here, making the district a place of encounter and labour.
Periods of prosperity were followed by decline: factory closures, empty buildings and social fragility left their traces. Yet the spatial structure remains legible. Warehouses, avenues and compact blocks recall an industrial past now being reactivated. Through reuse, local initiatives and creative use of existing spaces, Lower Molenbeek shows how a district can keep adapting. This walk explores the canal area as a living setting of change, where past and future continue to influence one another.
