The ramps and terraces of the Palace of Justice form a major urban ensemble, inseparable from the Brussels skyline and a genuine link between the upper and lower city.
This lecture-tour, presented by Thierry Henrard, places these monumental structures in their urban-planning and architectural context. They are often overlooked despite their essential role in the composition of the Palace and in its relationship with Brussels.
Drawing on extensive research, the visit explores Joseph Poelaert’s intentions, the essential yet often invisible details that structure this landscape, the abandoned projects and the evolution of this distinctive public space. It offers both a technical and sensitive reading of the relationship between architecture, topography and the city, revealing the power of a monumental base that we cross every day without noticing it.
Please note: the visit takes place exclusively outdoors, with no access to the interior of the Palace. The ramps and terraces form part of the public space and are freely accessible throughout the year.
Thierry Henrard, an architect, is the co-author with fellow architect Thomas Greck of an in-depth architectural study of the Brussels Palace of Justice. Conducted over four years, this research was published in the book « Horta avocat de Poelaert – La leçon du Palais de Justice de Bruxelles » (CIVA URBAN, 2023).
