Built in 1937-1938 to house the headquarters of the Société du Canal et des Installations maritimes de Bruxelles, this building is a remarkable example of Brussels architecture from the 1930s. Still used for its original function, it illustrates the importance of the canal in the capital’s economic and urban development. The visit reveals the architectural quality of the building, its volumes, materials and several remarkable elements of its interior decoration. Visitors will be able to admire frescoes evoking the old port of Brussels, stained-glass windows with marine motifs designed by Emile J. Patoux and made by master glassmaker Florent-Prosper Colpaert, as well as the Council Room, which has retained all its original character.
Echoing the theme “Our landscape, our heritage”, the route will be enriched by a selection of photographs by Marcel Vanhulst and Pierre Jouve.
