98 Former Studio of Marcel Hastir

A little-known gem in the Leopold Quarter, the Marcel Hastir Studio was, for more than 75 years, the home and workplace of the renowned Brussels painter, as well as a cultural hub that brought together artists, musicians and free thinkers of all kinds. Barbara, Jacques Brel, violinist Arthur Grumiaux, Abbé Pierre and Lanza del Vasto, a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, all shared their art and ideas there. During the war, Hastir hid Jews and members of the Resistance right under the noses of the Gestapo, despite their proximity. Saved from demolition at the very last moment in 2002 and preserved as it was, even after the master’s death in 2011, the studio continues to host concerts, exhibitions and lectures. A meeting place par excellence for lovers of art, culture and history and an absolute must-see.
