40 Folklore: Meiboom, Ommegang, heritage on the move

[Intangible heritage]

In the heart of Brussels, folklore shapes a living urban landscape in constant motion, where tradition keeps reinventing itself in public space. From the Ommegang to the traditional Meiboom, these emblematic events tell the story of a city celebrating itself through time, bodies, costumes, music and collective rituals.
This route reveals intangible heritage in action, where streets, squares and neighbourhoods become a stage. Folklore appears as a landscape in motion: it crosses eras, brings residents together and creates a dialogue between collective memory and contemporary expression.
Following the traces of this living heritage helps understand how it is inscribed in the city and how it continues to shape it today. An immersion in a festive and symbolic Brussels, where the urban landscape becomes a living stage and heritage is transmitted by walking, singing and sharing.
