Discover the Familistère of Laeken, an exceptional residential complex built at the end of the 19th century on the initiative of Jean-Baptiste Godin (1817-1888), founder of the famous Godin stove factories. Inspired by innovative social ideals, the complex was designed for 75 families and aimed to provide workers and their households with modern, comfortable living conditions. The land chosen near the canal was inexpensive, but also practical for bringing in raw materials. Sanitary facilities and running water on every floor offered a major improvement, one still unknown even in the nearby Palace of Laeken. The buildings, which included shared services, were modelled on the Social Palace that Godin had built in Guise, France. (Listed 08/08/1988)
