50 Composing a Brussels landscape through townhouses

This workshop invites children to discover the Brussels urban landscape through the façades of townhouses that are characteristic of many of the city’s neighbourhoods. By observing façades from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they identify the elements that shape the visual identity of streets: rhythms, openings, proportions, colours and details. They then create an imaginary façade in collage, enriched with drawings, reinterpreting these codes in their own way. The results can be assembled into a collective composition: a fictional Brussels street.
The activity offers a sensitive reading of everyday urban landscape and highlights a widely shared heritage.
Johanna Medvey is an illustrator specialised in architectural heritage. For more than ten years, she has worked on Brussels houses, highlighting their richness and details.
