19 Bruxellensis urbanus hortus: a secret oasis near Sainte-Catherine
[New heritage]
In the heart of the city lies a secret garden of 160 m², tucked away inside a block opposite the Grand Hospice. When the Schoonbrodt-Clotuche family bought their house in the 1970s, the centre of the block was occupied by dilapidated warehouses and garages. With the expertise of landscape architect Jacques Wirtz, it was transformed into a true green haven just a stone’s throw from Place De Brouckère.
The story of this garden reflects both activist visions of inner-city renewal and Wirtz’s landscape practice, always attentive to context. The visit offers a way to explore urban greening and landscape heritage, as well as the relationship between garden, architecture and the Beguinage district.
