The BELvue is exceptionally opening its roof to the public. Come and admire one of the most beautiful views of Brussels from the roof of the BELvue museum. The Hôtel Bellevue was built on the first plot of land on Place Royale to be sold to a private individual, in 1776. Philippe de Proft, a wealthy wine merchant and innkeeper, acquired the site and had a travellers’ hotel built in accordance with the architectural requirements set by Empress Maria Theresa, who wished to preserve the unity of Place Royale. Honoré de Balzac, Prince Metternich and Jérôme Bonaparte all stayed here. In 1902, the hotel was purchased by the Crown Foundation and made available to Princess Clémentine, daughter of Leopold II. Shortly after her marriage, it was redecorated and occupied by Prince Leopold and Princess Astrid. After serving as a museum of Decorative Arts and later as a museum of the Dynasty, the BELvue is now a museum dedicated to Belgium and its history.
