176 Vogelenzang Cemetery in Anderlecht: heritage between nature, memory and art
Nature
Inaugurated in 1954, Vogelenzang Cemetery extends over more than 18 hectares in Anderlecht, in a vast green setting on the edge of the protected Vogelzangbeek valley. Designed as a French-style park, the site combines landscape composition, funerary memory and the quality of a place for walking. Its avenues, perspectives and planted spaces make it a place of reflection, but also a landscape in its own right within the municipality.
The cemetery also functions as an open-air museum. It brings together remarkable funerary works and pays tribute to several figures linked to the history of Anderlecht. At the rear of the site, a group of monumental graves from the former cemetery forms a kind of local Père-Lachaise, where changing relationships to memory, funerary art and landscape can be read.
The cemetery is open on Sunday from 08:00 to 17:00. Self-guided visits are possible during opening hours.
Two guided tours are scheduled at 15:00 (one in French and one in Dutch). These tours will provide a better understanding of the various administrative and technical activities carried out at the cemetery. They will also introduce you to the professions that contribute each day to the management, maintenance and preservation of this place of memory, heritage and reflection.
Places are limited to 15 participants per group.
