Although the Senne is vaulted over several kilometres in the Brussels Region, it still flows in the open air in Anderlecht. Thanks to efforts to treat wastewater, life has now returned to the river. Along its banks, former industrial buildings — now repurposed — can also be seen, as well as recent work by Brussels Environment to restore the value of the Senne: renaturalised banks and river edges, a temporary flood zone, and new paths and trails. Just a short distance from the Senne, the canal is still used by barges transporting goods. This artificial waterway is also a popular place for walking and leisure — rowing, fishing, cruises — and even home to a small number of Brussels residents.
