Although the course of the Petite Senne was dried up in the 1950s and 1960s, Rue des Goujons and the surrounding district have kept the name of this freshwater fish (gudgeon), which was probably once found in the nearby river. At the end of the third section stands an imposing modernist building with 378 flats spread over 18 floors and 95 metres in length. It was built between 1975 and 1977 for the Foyer anderlechtois. Architects Michel Boelens and Robert Wasterlain designed its boomerang-shaped plan, while Edmond Dubrunfaut and his artists’ collective Cuesmes 68 created the pictorial ensemble decorating the three entrance halls: 540 m² divided into three compositions, La porte de la lune, La porte de la terre and La porte du soleil. This isolated large housing complex creates a clear break in the urban fabric. A source of pride for its designers and residents when it opened, it later suffered from the widespread stigma attached to slab housing. Its recent renovation, particularly the work on the balconies, has restored much of its presence.
