Planned in 1872 by Victor Besme, the Cureghem district became home to Anderlecht’s new town hall, designed by architect Jules Jacques Van Ysendijck. He chose the Flemish neo-Renaissance style, then particularly fashionable, and organised the building around a 48-metre belfry. The brick and Euville-stone façade, rich in sculpted elements, rests on a rusticated base. Reliefs in the tympana refer to the events that bring citizens to a town hall, while the names of Anderlecht’s various hamlets appear on the spandrels. The interior decoration was coordinated by Charles Albert, who was also drawn to the neo-Renaissance style, using wood, stucco and marouflaged painted canvases. Elegant stained glass illuminates the main rooms, while an impressive glass roof dominates the grand staircase. Designed in 1879 by glass artist H. Dobbelaere, it uses a rich decorative vocabulary of floral garlands, cartouches, ribbons, mascarons, vases, birds and coats of arms. The building played a major role in the district’s development and urbanisation at a time when Anderlecht was still strongly rural. (Listed since 13/04/1995)
