Woluwe-Saint-Pierre/Sint-Pieters-Woluwe’s sports centre, Sportcity, is sited on a former racecourse that was once the Stockel/Stokkel airfield. Built in 1974 to a design by architects René Aerts and Paul Ramon, also known as the Forum Group, Sportcity welcomes 800,000 sports enthusiasts every year. The Belgian architectural duo, active from 1950 to 1987, mainly designed public buildings such as hospitals, schools, sports complexes and social housing. Their designs were always at the cutting edge of technology, as demonstrated by the Sportcity complex, and especially its swimming pool. The original brief called for a 50-metre Olympic-size swimming pool to train top-level athletes, as well as pools suitable for children. To meet this challenge, the architects combined functions, creating a pool with a movable floor that could be adapted to suit different users, thus requiring less surface area. There are two pools: a shallow one for children, and another with a movable floor that can be lowered over its entire surface to create the Olympic pool. The sports centre is made up of several interconnected structures, some of which have a triangular profile. This shape is often used in swimming pools to cover the long span required while letting in as much natural light as possible.

No photography is allowed inside the building.
