Walk

La Woluwe: the charm of a changing valley

As we walk through precious old heritage landscapes in an area undergoing rapid urban development, we’ll see how spaces are being reclaimed for nature and biodiversity and explore grand residences and landscaped parks from the early 20th century.
The move to redevelop Brussels’ ‘urban motorways’ has left its mark on this landscape, with the transformation of Boulevard de la Woluwe/Woluwelaan, the arrival of a new tram line and a green walkway and cycle route, combined with nature-based solutions for water management, the choice of trees and the way they are planted.
The uncovering of part of the Woluwe stream has allowed some neglected areas to be returned to nature, while also enabling spontaneous use of the space by local residents. It is also the first project in Brussels based on eco-engineering principles, with the restoration of the Lindekemale mill channel, its hydraulic system and wheel – vestiges of economic life from days gone by.
The guide for the walk will be landscape architect Anne-Marie Sauvat of Atelier Eole, which designed and implemented these redevelopment projects.

In cooperation with Brussels Chatterguides.
