Boulevard de la Woluwe

Boulevard de la Woluwe/Woluwelaan was first conceived in the aftermath of the First World War. However, it was not actually built until the mid-1960s, by which time the original plan for a broad tree-lined avenue had morphed into an urban motorway typical of the era. It was soon lined with office buildings, a vivid reminder of the Trente Glorieuses (30-year post-war boom) and the advent of the tertiary sector. Large housing estates, such as Aquilon and Les Éoliennes, completed the postmodernist picture.
The boulevard is nevertheless flanked by magnificent green spaces, successively preserved by the municipal authorities since the 1930s – at the request of King Albert I, it is said!
