The former headquarters of Fabricom by CERAU, the new administrative center of Uccle

Uccle/Ukkel’s new municipal council building, which opened in 2022, is an exemplary heritage regeneration project. The old town hall in Place Jean Vander Elst/Jean Vander Elstplein was a 19th-century mansion that had become too cramped to accommodate the growth in municipal services. Keen to bring all its services under one roof, the municipality set about converting the former Fabricom headquarters in Rue de Stalle/Stallestraat, designed by the architectural firm CERAU in the 1970s. Fabricom specialised in electrical equipment, piping and industrial mechanics, and worked on the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, carrying out the stability study for the Atomium and installing the electrical and lighting systems. The new municipal administrative centre, known as Project U, is the work of Archipelago and MK Engineering. With a surface area of 14,600 m², it brings together 450 administrative officers with a view to providing more joined-up services and a better experience for citizens. The renovation is sympathetic to the original building, while adding a contemporary feel. The building’s distinctive structure has been preserved and the external concrete façade elements have been reused, with the repeating window pattern linking up the different levels to give a more homogeneous look to the façade. Combining respect for heritage with sustainable environmental performance, this project won a be.exemplary award for buildings in Brussels that set a benchmark for sustainable development.

The guided tour will highlight the contribution of CERAU co-founder Françoise Blomme, one of the first women in Belgium to make it big as an architect. It will also delve into the history of CERAU and the key role it played in Brussels at that time, as well as the innovative construction systems (such as TARC) developed against the backdrop of a booming population and the rise of prefabrication. Your guide to the project will be architect, author and archivist Irene Lund.
