Walk

Rupture and construction in the North district

© Min. OW, nr. 198496, Regie der Gebouwen

Having succumbed to the progress of the Golden Sixties and the office towers of the Manhattan Plan, the lively and cosmopolitan Northern Quarter, with its housing, factories, cinemas and cafés, became a concrete desert, frequented only during weekday office hours. The neighbourhood lost its centre, and its public spaces became inhospitable places to be. Today, however, there are new plans afoot in the area, some of which have already been implemented.
This walk will highlight the contrasts between the past and future of the Northern Quarter, where renovation, urban agriculture, green and blue networks to enhance biodiversity and positive energy neighbourhoods are paving the way for a brighter future.

In cooperation with Brukselbinnenstebuiten.
