Walk

Modest Art Deco in Schaerbeek

© Klare Lijn

The Roaring Twenties left behind not only magnificent urban palaces, but also cheerful social housing. Foyer Schaerbeekois built several dozen houses during this period, from small villas in the Terdelt garden city to larger blocks of houses in the surrounding streets. Hundreds of less well-off citizens could now move into one or more decent Art Deco buildings.
The Great Depression of the 1930s slowed the trend, and it was not until several decades later that social housing in Schaerbeek picked up again. But Art Deco had long since disappeared, and modernist variants sprung up, more than once replacing the old Art Deco blocks.
This walk will take you through the old, the renovated and the new.
