Church of Saint Anne

Opposite Koekelberg Town Hall stands the rigorously geometrical Sainte-Anne/Sint-Anna Church. Built by architects Jean Cosse and Brigitte De Groof between 1989 and 1990, it is reminiscent of modern buildings by the American Louis Kahn and even Italy’s Carlo Scarpa. It is the third church built on this site. Made entirely of concrete bricks, it has a clean, rational look that is highly original. Its bell tower is hollowed out, allowing light to pass through and the bells to stand out against the sky. The main building has a windowless façade punctuated by pilasters with bevelled heads. In the centre, a niche resembling the openings in the bell tower houses a statue of St Anne accompanied by the adolescent Virgin Mary. The pared-back look continues inside, with the concrete block walls left bare. The choir is lit by large openings in the ceiling that cast overhead light onto a ceramic Christ on the cross. The walls are decorated with the Stations of the Cross engraved on copper plates. The church also features a collection of ceramics depicting saints, created between 1990 and 2010 by Max Van der Linden and Stéphane Terlinden.
