Jette Cultural centre

Jette Cultural Centre was built in 1981 following major renovation work by architect Jacques Cuisinier on a 1923 villa and a 1938 apartment block designed by Édouard Pelseneer. Its postmodern look dates back to 1992, when the corner section was added by architects Atelier Arcane (Jean-Philippe Ferrière and Philippe Danhier) in cooperation with illustrator François Schuiten, who designed the sphere that crowns the main bay. This corner building is like something out of Schuiten’s own comic strips, and acts as a kind of beacon for the neighbourhood. The 1992 building (our main point of interest for the Heritage Days) is rendered in yellow and embellished with blue limestone. It has a flat roof and flared eaves that give it a certain dynamic quality. The main bay containing the entrance incorporates a cylindrical glass tower topped by a monumental metal armillary sphere. The side bays are separated by narrow grooves that extend into the eaves. The Cultural Centre houses a theatre, an exhibition hall, workshops, meeting rooms, a cafeteria and offices.

Visitors who wish to do so will be able to climb the tower via a spiral staircase. There will also be a chance to admire the fresco by Brussels artist Oli-B in the Centre’s garden.
