An overview of Belgian abstraction (1970-2000)
The stations of Belgian abstract art: from the Brussels metro to the Jette Museum.
Since it opened in 1976, the Brussels metro has been a gallery for an incredible array of Belgian abstract artists. Travellers will come across sculptures by Pol Bury and Marc Mendelson, a colourful stained-glass window by Guy Vandenbranden and a fresco by Jan Burssens. The artists chosen by the jury at the time can be found in the collection of the Abstract Art Museum in Jette. Come and learn more about these artists in the museum dedicated to them.
The Jette Abstract Art Museum opened its doors five years ago in the building next to the house where René Magritte lived and worked. It houses over 200 works by mainly Belgian artists. The building itself is interesting for its colourful geometric patterns, which give it an avant-garde feel.
