Xavier Hufkens Gallery, Saint Georges
The Xavier Hufkens contemporary art gallery is one of the oldest in Brussels, having originally opened its doors in the 1980s. In 1992, it moved into a former Beaux-Arts-style town house in Rue Saint-Georges/Sint-Jorisstraat, Ixelles/Elsene. This had been converted from a late 19th-century neoclassical house by architect Benjamin de Lestré de Fabribeckers in 1911. To accommodate the various exhibition spaces and an apartment on the top floor, the house underwent major alterations by Robbrecht & Daem Architecten in cooperation with Marie-José Van Hee in 1992. The work involved adding an attic storey, replacing the cornice on the front façade and building a contemporary façade to the rear. A garden designed by Jacques Wirtz was also added to the rear of the building. This can be used for displaying outdoor artworks when there are exhibitions. The interior of the house was radically redesigned to accommodate the exhibition spaces, in the minimalist white-cube style befitting an art gallery: smooth concrete floors, maximum light and white walls. A contemporary extension was added, demolished and then rebuilt in monolithic form in 2022, again by Robbrecht & Daem Architecten, almost tripling the exhibition space and creating a series of light-filled spaces for contemporary art exhibitions.
The gallery will be open throughout the Heritage Days weekend as part of Rendez-Vous, the weekend of Brussels Art Week.
