Modern isms in Etterbeek: the VUB Campus
In 1971, Renaat Braem was commissioned to design an administrative and rectorate building for Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). The building expresses particular symbolic values and illustrates the organic biomorphic aesthetic that Braem developed in his last projects. The Rectorate Building was to represent an allegory of free inquiry: the unique shape of an elongated ellipse, the monumental concrete canopy, the vaulted entrance hall, the stairwell with elliptical staircases, the colour palette and extraordinary murals on each floor (totaling 500 meters in length). This building can be considered a total work of art by the architect, as it was entirely designed and executed by Braem. Willy Van Der Meeren was commissioned to build student accommodation between 1971 and 1980. In memory of the student revolt of May 1968, he built a labyrinthine village that would be easier for students to find their way around than the police. The one- and two-story rectangular buildings are made of precast Variel concrete elements. The prefabricated structures are arranged in rows of four and contain four bedrooms, two sanitary facilities and a living room. The modules form four buildings, distinguished by the colour of the spandrel panels. The choice of materials used (concrete, aluminium and vinyl) contributed to the rapid construction of the buildings. Once the student accommodation complex was completed, construction began on the various auditoriums and lecture theatres, most of which were built between 1972 and 1976 by the Ghent architects Baro. The most spectacular is Aula Q, a turntable divisible auditorium (TDA) with a seated capacity of between 250 and 1,250. This flexibility is made possible by a rotating mechanism and bare concrete walls.
