The renaissance of a historic street and its neighbours

© urban.brussels

At the end of the twentieth century, the rue de Laeken underwent a profound transformation. The key element in this process was the redevelopment of a wasteland and the development of a plot of land that had become vacant after the demolition of an office building. This reconstruction project was the result of an architectural competition for young European architects, organized by AG and the Fondation pour l’Architecture. The winners of the competition, including three Belgians from Atelier 55, designed housing and commercial spaces set around a large interior garden. The neoclassical building blended harmoniously with the street’s existing architecture, while adding a modern and original touch, with a variety of forms and particular attention paid to the picturesque and an extensive decoration. In the adjacent streets, the rue de l’Épargne and the rue des Fleurs, the city of Brussels has constructed a complex of postmodern social housing and energy-saving dwellings. Recently, AG has renovated its campus in the building situated in the rue du Pont-Neuf, which was built in 1995: lightness, transparency and sustainability are the hallmarks of this renovation, which has yielded AG the Be.Exemplary award. The route also leads us to the Théâtre National with its magnificent façade, a real veil of opalescent undulating glass. Finally, we’ll arrive at the flamboyant AG building in the avenue Émile Jacqmain, in order to discover this milestone in postmodern architecture.
