The protagonists of Postmodernism in Brussels

A. de Ville de Goyet © urban.brussels

Postmodernism made its appearance in Belgium in the late 1970s as a response to the coldness of modernist and functionalist architecture.
In office blocks and homes alike, Belgian society wanted to rediscover a specific décor drawing on the past despite the need for it to serve a variety of purposes.
It would dominate the architectural scene for four decades, making Brussels one of the global centres of postmodernism.
Several trends in the same style coexisted during this golden period. Some buildings are in busy neighbourhoods and very well known, while others have a lower profile.
Our tour will showcase a number of wonderful feats of postmodernist architecture and in particular of Atelier de Genval, a pioneer of that movement.

In cooperation with E-Guides.
