Le Meyboom on show
An eclectic town house dating from 1883, on the corner of Avenue de Stalingrad/Stalingradlaan and Rue Roger van der Weyden/Rogier van der Weydenstraat near the Palais du Midi, has been home to the Brotherhood of the Companions of St Lawrence’s Meyboom museum since 2012. Planting the Meyboom, a word derived from the Dutch for ‘tree of joy’, is a folk festival that has been held in the historic centre of Brussels on 9 August every year since 1308, making it Brussels’ oldest tradition. The event involves planting a beech tree at the crossroads between Rue des Sables/Zandstraat and Rue du Marais/Broekstraat. There are also processions and various folklore activities through the day. The Meyboom museum gives you the chance to discover old documents and films presenting this folk tradition dating back over 700 years, with its wheel of fortune, hobby-horse and giants, listed as UNESCO intangible heritage.
