Walk

From the Léopold district to the beating heart of Europe

Jean-Paul Remy © visit.brussels

The Leopold Quarter arose as bourgeois residents gradually settled beyond the Royal Palace in the valley on the left bank of the Maelbeek/Maalbeek stream and subsequently on the slope of the right bank.
With the European Commission taking up residence here in 1960, this district would become increasingly services-focused.
This development saw modernist and postmodernist architecture spring up in the streets and squares.
